When a supply line fails in or under a slab, there are two paths: jackhammer the floor to chase the old line, or abandon it and route a new line overhead. For this Aliso Viejo two story, we rerouted. A handful of small access openings in the hallway ceiling, walls, and garage soffit let us pull the new line through the structure, add an expansion tank at the water heater, and leave the homeowner with drywall patches instead of trenched floors.

The decision
Chasing a failed line through a slab means demolition in the middle of the house, days of noise, and floors that never quite match again. Rerouting abandons the bad line where it lies and runs a new one through walls and ceiling framing instead. The disruption becomes a series of small, patchable openings.
Protecting the house
Before any cutting, plastic went up. Doorway containment sealed off the hallway, floor protection covered the garage and entry, and every opening was cut clean and square so the patches afterward would be simple.
The reroute
Access openings in the hallway ceiling, the wall cavities, and the garage soffit gave us a path for the new line from the water heater to the fixtures it feeds. At the heater, the new run picked up a potable expansion tank, protecting the system from thermal pressure spikes.
The result
The failed line is out of service for good, the new line runs overhead where it can be reached, and the repair scars are a handful of rectangles waiting for drywall patches. No trenches, no jackhammer, no lost flooring.
